Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of Terms

By downloading, installing, or using the Chapter One iOS application or any accompanying website (collectively, the “Service”), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service (“Terms”). If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. The Service

Chapter One is a book summary app that provides audio and text summaries of books. The Service offers (a) free access to a catalog of summaries, (b) optional in-app purchases and subscriptions that unlock additional content and premium features, and (c) optional cloud backup of user-generated content.

3. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old—or the minimum legal age in your jurisdiction—to use the Service. The Service does not require creating a user account; however, you must have a valid Apple ID to download the app and complete in-app purchases.

4. Subscriptions & Payments

• Premium (“Pro”) features are offered as an auto-renewing subscription processed through Apple’s In-App Purchase system and managed by third-party payment processors on our behalf.
• A seven-day free trial may be available. Your subscription will automatically convert to a paid subscription unless canceled at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
• Payments, refunds, and cancellation are governed by Apple Media Services Terms and conditions. We do not process or store your payment information.

5. User-Generated Content

• You retain ownership of any content you create in the app.
• You grant Chapter One a limited, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to store, process, and display such content solely for the purpose of operating the Service and, if enabled, syncing with cloud storage.
• You are responsible for ensuring that any content you provide does not infringe any third-party rights or violate any applicable laws.

6. Intellectual Property

Except for User-Generated Content, the Service—including text, graphics, logos, and software—is the property of Chapter One or its licensors. Content is provided for educational and informational purposes.

Synthetic-audio notice – The audio in the app are computer-generated using the open-source Kokoro-TTS project (Apache 2.0 © Hexgrad).

7. Prohibited Use

You agree not to:

• Reverse-engineer, decompile, or disassemble any part of the Service.
• Scrape, copy, or bulk-download the content for commercial use.
• Deploy automated scripts or malware that could impair the Service.
• Use the Service to create or distribute unlawful, hateful, or infringing content.

8. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Service is provided “as-is” and “as-available.” To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not guarantee that content is error-free or that the Service will be uninterrupted.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Chapter One shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of or related to your use of the Service—even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

10. Changes to the Service & Terms

We may modify or discontinue parts of the Service at any time. We may also update these Terms. Material changes will be announced in-app or on this page. Continued use of the Service after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

11. Governing Law

These Terms and any dispute arising hereunder are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA, without regard to its conflict of laws principles.
